goodbye, white flour.

Yes, we have caved. Into the pressures and high expectations of New Years' Resolutions we go!

Health has been on the mind for quite some time, so my wonderfully supportive husband and I have decided to give up white flour from the start of the new year (our year actually began right after our anniversary trip (yay for making it through the first year!)) and we will take inventory and decide whether to make it a permanent change by the first day of Lent (more on that later).

So white flour it is. Why, you ask? We don't consume an excessive amount, or so we thought. Rather, it's my sneaky way of forcing myself (and Dave too) to make a little more effort to be health conscious, and to cut out a lot of desserts (you are reading the words of Queen of the land of the Sweet Tooth). I find that the majority of desserts, at least the ones I tend to indulge in, have white flour listed as the primary ingredient. People, we are talking about pastries, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, muffins, sticky buns, etc. etc. etc. And that's just the desserts. Not to mention all the sugar, but one thing at a time.

I am not anti-white flour, just anti-white flour in excess. We already eat mostly whole wheat breads and pasta, and had already been experimenting with wheat flour in desserts. Tonight Dave made whole wheat chocolate chip cookies from Joy the Baker (thanks for being so awesome!). They were positively scrumtidilyumptious. Extra dark chocolate morsels are a must.

Speaking of Joy the Baker, if you haven't been to her blog, you will want to do so now. She blogs about her cooking endeavors (and takes super great pictures of it all), some of which she has adapted, and some of which are her own recipes. I love how creative she is with everything and that most of the recipes are super healthy. She's a SoCal blogger, and I fully intend to take her cooking classes in LA once we're out there.

To end tonight, I will leave by asking for some opinions.

I've been thinking for a while now about changing the nature of this blog, or starting an entirely new one (hence the absence in my posting, not to mention our 2 week vacation). I've been praying about it and talking with Dave too. I've been thinking about steering away from the more personal type of blog, not that I have anything against it (friends whom I follow, please continue; I love reading about your lives!).

I think I just want to write about something that would bring joy to people's days; something particular that I'm interested in and would be helpful to another. I've got some ideas brewing, but want to know your thoughts.

Ideas? Thoughts? Snide remarks?

Adieu,
the mrs.

  2. I read a quote a few days ago that I have been thinking about ever since. It was in reference to CS Lewis and his friendship with JR Tolkien and the creativity that they funneled into their writings because of it. The part of the quote that made me think was this, "What is it that you have always wanted to create? Thank God for small beginnings. And a few creative friends." Love the name of your blog, BTW. 4. so i'm not a regular reader of your blog (until now). i noticed your comment @ joy the baker (which i also ready...and 100% agree with you...AWESOME blog!) and clicked on your name. i am new to blogging and just went through the whole "what am i doing...what is this about" thought process. it's difficult! having said that i'm DEFINITELY not an expert, but i say blog about what you truly want to blog about...if the current format is feeling stale then don't be afraid to mix it up! it shouldn't feel like a chore, but be fun for you to write and for the readers to read. and, being a california girl - i'm sending you a big welcome!
